About Lynda Bassett

I am a Utah-based artist who specializes in oil paintings, murals, and commissioned work.

I am part of an extended pioneer clan with the surname of Lyman that helped settle southeastern Utah. I grew up in the beautiful red-rock country of Canyonlands, Elk Mountain and the Hole in the Rock. I was happiest when I was outside, riding my horse or drawing. Whenever my right hand was free there was a pencil in it. I knew when I was very young that I wanted to be an artist.

I studied art at BYU Provo with the goal to graduate in illustration….but then I took my first oil painting class…my love for the outdoors seemed to find its voice. I will always be drawing, but I love to paint! I graduated with a degree in fine art and along the way I had a wonderful 25-year career teaching art to children in two private schools in California as well as in my own private art studio. I also painted murals in schools, people’s homes, many children’s bedrooms and outside town projects.

Seven years ago the opportunity presented itself to move back to Utah to work with a small team who painted murals for Latter-day Saint temples, run by Linda Curley Christensen. My love of painting big, painting murals and painting the outdoors seems to have been bringing me to this opportunity.

Since moving back to Utah, I have also had the opportunity to study with some amazing teachers through workshops and art trips, such as John Poon, Casey Childs, Josh Clare, David Dibble, and Bryan Mark Taylor. I traveled to Russia a few years ago with such a group of artists to view the many murals and landscapes done by the famous classical Russian artists. It was a life-changing experience and an educational opportunity to keep learning and growing.

When I’m not painting murals, I love to paint for and with people. It is thrilling to have one of my paintings go into someone’s home, either through them connecting with one of my works or through a commission….and painting outside (plain-air painting) is just the best! The outdoors, family, friends old and new and art just go together!
