In visual arts, the support is a solid surface onto which the painting is placed.  I prefer rigid supports for durability and longevity.   The paint surface does not expand and contract reacting to temperature and humidity like it often does on a stretched canvas.   I include with each painting description the type of support it is on. For more details on each support type, please scroll to the bottom of this page.

Support Types That I Use

Linen Panel is a favorite support of mine. I like the brand Centurion. Their  Deluxe Linen Panel is a professional premium oil-primed linen panel. It is lightweight and combines the strength of a thin but rigid panel with a beautiful tight-weave quality linen.

Hard wood panel - masonite is the modern engineered wood that is often used today as an oil painting panel, although birch, oak, poplar are sometimes used.   I usually attach canvas to the hardwood, but sometimes I paint directly onto the wood. Either way, the panel is prepared first front and back with two coats of high-quality gesso so there will be no warping. I usually attach a high quality tight-woven canvas to it with a museum-quality acid free pva glue and a vacuum press to insure a strong bond.

Alumalite is a strong aluminum composite panel with a high-density corrugated polypropylene core that will not swell, corrode, rot, wick water or delaminate even under prolonged water exposure. I attach canvas to this superior surface in the same manner I attach canvas to any surface. I often use this support for very large paintings as it is very light weight yet extremely strong.

ABS panel is a hidden gem in the art industry because of its archival quality. These panels are extremely durable, lightweight, resistant to moisture, warping and cracking and come ready to paint….no gesso or canvas necessary. This is an excellent panel for portraits or figure work where not a lot of texture is desired.

Birch Wood Deep-Cradled Panel - I sometimes use this panel for illustrative work. It looks like a wood box with the painting or illustration on the front of it.  The sides can also be painted or stained.   It is sturdy, needs no frame, accepts water and oil-based mediums, looks great and goes with many decors.

Allin panel is prepared by the Artefex company. It is a lead-primed aluminum composite panel that is crafted with an extra-fine-weave linen for professional oil painting. It is lightweight, durable and has excellent paint adhesion qualities for long-lasting artwork.
